Kablooey!: Price & Release Date Announcement

So, I announced earlier that I’m shooting for the 2BeeGames competition deadline of September 15th. Kablooey has now turned into a contest entry, instead of the commercial path I originally intended (which honestly I wasn’t too keen on as the gameplay in this game is so unique). So as a result of that, I’ve changed the original plans I had of the price and release method. So how much will Kablooey be?

Kablooey will be absolutely free. I might try out a model of “pay what you want” that some music artists have used (you essentially download the full game and decide how much you want to pay, from $0 to $100), but regardless there will be one version of the game, and it will be absolutely free. Woo!

Now the release date, I don’t have it set, but obviously it will be done and available before September 15th. And before everyone laughs at me, as they always do with my release dates (and good reason, I suppose) let me remind ya that I actually HAVE to make this deadline, and I’m fully confident I can do it. A week before release the game will likely undergo beta testing, so be sure to sign up for the forums if you’d like a piece of that action. And now, I’d like to share the concept of Kablooey!:

Kablooey! unfolds in a picturesque canyon city, an idyllic setting for family life if not for one glaring exception—the dilapidated skyscraper that’s teetering on the brink of ruin. This eyesore is not only an aesthetic blight, with its growing mold and infestation of rats and scorpions, but it’s also become a real safety concern. The situation was almost resolved when the original demolition company was under contract to replace the hazardous building with a new apartment complex. However, after absconding with the city’s grant money, they’ve left us in a dire predicament. With the President of the USA scheduled to visit within hours for a major speech, the pressure is mounting to address this looming disaster. After all, no city wants to host the nation’s leader beside a skyscraper that’s a collapse waiting to happen—safety must come first.

Hey, you look like a person who can get things done. Do you think, maybe, you could get this building knocked down for us? I don’t have any cash or big heavy machinery, but I bet if you look around the city there are plenty of things you can use.

Oh, you say you already looked and didn’t find anything of use? Well that’s because you’re not thinking with your head! You need to combine items to make them of any use. We got that ol’ missile launcher that just needs a few repairs, and that Airsho Plane just needs a tank of gas to run, and…

Say, you know what, since you’re going to be going around town like this, do you think you could complete a few items on this list to get our city back into shape? Just a few odd things here and there. Hey, complete some of those and you’ll prove to me that you’ve got what it takes, and I’ll try to delay the President an extra hour with every list you complete. Well, get moving and start combining some items!

And that’s the Kablooey concept: combine two items and see what happens. Be smart about it…combining a car with a newspaper doesn’t do anything, but what if you combined newspaper with an empty barrel? Well you get a barrel full of newspaper…that kind of seems pointless doesn’t it? Unless…hmmm…

Oh, did I mention there’s over 200 objects to grab/create? Better get movin’!

    Hooray for free games!
Although I really hope you make a decent profit off of this.
It would be nice to get a chance to play it before you decide how much to pay though. I’ll probably download it for free then go back and pay for it after I’ve decided how much I think it’s worth. Based on the screen shots my range right now is $5-20. Looking at all of the banners and inside references gives me a “hell yeah!” feeling.

I think that might be possible to play and pay, but I’ll have to look into it. Fun fact: Q-Games, the guys that made PixelJunk Monsters and Eden, have given me the go ahead to use their logo on the in game billboards you see in the screen above. Woo!

Thatgamecompany (makers of flOw and Flower for PS3) couldn’t do the same due to the Sony contract they’re in. Phooey. Optum has given me the OK for their logo though. Woo!

  3. Interesting idea for a payment method to say the least, I wish you good luck that you can profit from this game. Really digging the art direction in this one, I love the look and feel of everything.

200 Objects is insane as all hell. I hope you include some crazy things when people try combining a news paper with a barrel, just to encourage people to be creative and explore. 🙂

    Hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrah 😀
15 September and the beta release a week before burning on fire burning burning ……………..

Hope at that date I still alive due lots of Burning 😀

    and Freeeeee Games Hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrah 🙂

  5. This game is just dying for an in-game achievement system. I mean, even if to get an achievement you had to (following your previous example) “Make a Barrel Full of Newspapers”, that would encourage people to play about and experiment.

    Yeah, I’m hyped. 😉

  6. UltimateAgent says:

Will you be able to combine items that you have created from two other items?

  7. chubigans says:

    @ LostOverThere:
That’s basically what the list system is all about. There are three lists, to where if you create something, you’re definitely checking off something on the list!

    @ UltimateAgent:
Sometimes but not all the time. But I’d say it’s a good 50/50 chance that whatever you create will be available to combine yet again.

Many posts back, I noticed ‘The Soup’ billboard in a screen shot. Did you do it just for laughs, or was it some sort of advertisement.

Anyways, woo! Can’t wait for it. Good luck in the comp.

  9. chubigans says:

I did it for laughs as I love that show, but I didn’t think it really fit the game. 🙂

  10. @chubigans: Epic.

  11. Pete says:

So if I understand this right your mission is to take down the building either by flying a plane into it, blowing it up with dynamite or in one of like 20 different ways? Sounds like awesome action to me 😀

  12. chubigans says:

Uh, you definitely wont be flying any planes into buildings. For obvious reasons.

But there will be a pretty unique way of taking down the building.

  13. blueflare says:

Oh, wow. You’re just full of original concepts, Chubs. That sounds incredibly fun.

Man, I’m excited to tear this town apart.

If some men are willing to learn about this good topic they should buy an essay using the paper writing services.
